History & Significance

Venutius transformed Stanwick into an enormous fortified complex — excavations by Sir Mortimer Wheeler revealed over 700 acres of earthworks added in phases. This was not a traditional hillfort but a military encampment capable of housing a large field army. Venutius used the years 69-71, while Rome was occupied with civil war, to build his strength for the final confrontation.
