History & Significance

Following the costly Royalist tactical success at Lansdown on 5 July 1643, Hopton was severely wounded by an accidental gunpowder explosion; the incapacitation of the Royalist commander disrupted subsequent operations and contributed to the Royalist army being trapped at Devizes until Roundway Down.
