History & Significance

Glendale crofters in Skye resisted the removal of traditional grazing rights and refused to pay rent. When government officials arrived they were expelled from the district. A gunboat HMS Jackal was dispatched to Skye and the government arrested the Glendale Martyr leaders who became celebrated figures in the crofting rights campaign.
