Richmond Park was used as a muster and training ground for Parliamentary forces in 1642 as Parliament organised its armies and the London Trained Bands prepared for operations. The enclosed deer park provided secure ground for drilling forces before deployment, and Richmond was important for securing the Thames crossings south-west of London.
