The Battle

History & Significance

The Ashby garrison under the Hastings family proved extremely difficult to contain. Despite Parliamentary blockades from 1644, the garrison raided across three counties — Leicestershire, Derbyshire, and Staffordshire — disrupting Parliamentary supply lines and tax collection. The garrison's activities illustrate how a determined Royalist force could tie down Parliamentary resources far beyond its numerical strength.
