History & Significance

Parliamentary forces under Myddelton seized Welshpool in 1644 as part of the campaign that culminated in the decisive Battle of Montgomery in September. Welshpool was a key market town and communications hub in Montgomeryshire. Its seizure gave Parliament control of the northern Severn valley and cut Royalist lateral communications between north and south Wales.
