History & Significance

Sir Andrew Moray — Guardian of Scotland — systematically reduced English-held castles in north-east Scotland during the Second War of Independence. Dundarg Castle on the Aberdeenshire coast was one of these. Its recovery denied the English a coastal supply point and demonstrated Moray's ability to operate even in areas where Edward Balliol and his English backers had established positions.
