History & Significance

After Arkinholm, James II besieged the great Douglas castle of Threave — the last stronghold of the Black Douglases. He brought a great bombard (cannon) called "Mons Meg" — still on display at Edinburgh Castle. The garrison surrendered. The fall of Threave ended Douglas power in Galloway as surely as Arkinholm ended it in the south. Both were consequences of James II's personal murder of the 8th Earl in 1452.
