History & Significance

Grantown-on-Spey in Strathspey was Grant clan territory — the Grants were largely Whig and pro-government, creating a frontier zone between Jacobite Badenoch to the south and government-aligned Moray to the northeast. In 1689, Jacobite raiding parties from Badenoch probed north into the Grant lands along the Spey. Skirmishing occurred near Grantown as armed Grant clansmen resisted Jacobite foraging and coercion parties. The Grants' loyalty to the government was significant as they formed a barrier against Jacobite expansion from the central Highlands into the northeast. Their resistance in 1689 contributed to the containment of the rising before Cromdale.
