The Battle

History & Significance

Prince Maurice — Prince Rupert's less celebrated brother — surprised a Parliamentary cavalry force under the Earl of Stamford at Ripple Field near Tewkesbury. The Parliamentary horse was routed and Stamford's advance into Worcestershire checked. The battle contributed to Royalist control of the Severn valley in 1643. Maurice's cavalry showed the same dash as his brother's, though he lacked Rupert's overall strategic flair.
