The Battle

History & Significance

Parliamentary forces invested Wallingford Castle with formal siege lines in 1645, cutting the Thames crossing at Wallingford and isolating the garrison. Despite Parliamentary control of the surrounding countryside the castle walls proved impervious to attack; Parliamentary forces settled down to a blockade that would eventually starve the garrison into submission.
