History & Significance

During the Second Welsh War, south-east Wales — Gwent and the Caerleon area — saw military operations as Edward I's forces sought to prevent Welsh coordination between north and south. Caerleon, site of the great Roman legionary fortress of Isca, was a strategic crossing of the Usk. Its retention by English forces was important for the southern flank of Edward's campaign.
