History & Significance

Newport Pagnell was established as a major Parliamentary garrison in late 1643 under Sir Samuel Luke, becoming the headquarters of the Eastern Association in the south Midlands. The town controlled the Ouse crossing on the road between London and the Midlands and served as a base for Parliamentary cavalry raids into Royalist territory. Oliver Cromwell visited and John Bunyan later served in the garrison. The garrison conducted and repelled multiple skirmishes throughout 1643-1645.
