Following the catastrophic Welsh defeat at Pwll Melyn (Battle of Usk) in May 1405, English forces conducted operations in the Usk valley and surrounding area to consolidate their gains and suppress remaining Welsh supporters. Tregrug castle — a minor fortification near Usk — was the scene of some of this activity. The Usk valley had been heavily contested throughout the Glyndŵr rebellion.
English forces: c. 500–1,000 men. Welsh: c. 400–800 men.
