Alexander MacDonald of Keppoch was among the first clan chiefs to join Prince Charles, and his men fired the first shots of the '45 at the Highbridge skirmish. The Keppoch MacDonalds fought in every major engagement and Keppoch himself was killed at Culloden — shot through the chest, he famously continued toward the enemy until he fell. The Keppoch country around Roy Bridge and the Spean valley was the operational base from which the clan supported the rising throughout. Keppoch's participation is particularly notable because the Keppoch MacDonalds had no legal title to their lands and existed essentially as a warrior clan.
