History & Significance

Alan of Galloway, son of Roland, was the most powerful lord in south-west Scotland and the last of the great independent Galloway rulers. His submission to William the Lion in 1209 represented the effective end of Galloway's quasi-independent status. Alan would go on to lead Scottish forces in Ireland and prove a useful -- if not entirely controllable -- royal servant. His death without legitimate male heirs in 1234 created the crisis that Alexander II had to resolve by force.
