History & Significance

After the catastrophic Royalist defeat at Naseby on 14 June 1645, the remnants of Charles I\'s main field army retreated towards Wales via the Midlands. Parliamentary cavalry under Fairfax pursued rapidly, and at Daventry and along the road through Northamptonshire, significant numbers of Royalist stragglers, baggage and prisoners were taken. The pursuit effectively destroyed the cohesion of the remaining Royalist army. Daventry\'s position on Watling Street made it a key point in this disorganised retreat.

Forces Involved

Parliamentary: New Model Army cavalry pursuit columns. Royalist: remnants of the field army, baggage train and stragglers
