History & Significance

Tenby, with its medieval town walls largely intact, was a contested strategic point in Pembrokeshire throughout the Civil War. The town changed hands more than once. Its medieval walls — some of the best-preserved in Wales — were the scene of Civil War combat. After the war, Cromwell's forces used Tenby as a base during the Second Civil War operations. The town was not slighted and its walls survive substantially complete.
