The Battle

History & Significance

In the most dramatic march ever undertaken by a Scottish king in England, Alexander II led forces all the way to Dover in 1216 to do homage to Prince Louis of France whom the rebel English barons had invited to become king. The march demonstrated both Alexander's ambition and his willingness to exploit English civil wars. When Louis was defeated after John's death and the barons reconciled with the young Henry III, Alexander found himself diplomatically exposed and was forced to reach accommodation with England.
