History & Significance

Prince Rupert stormed Liverpool on his way to relieve York before Marston Moor. The small Parliamentary garrison was overwhelmed; the port gave the Royalists a western landing point for Irish troops. Liverpool was retaken by Parliament later in 1644 and never again fell.
