The Battle

History & Significance

After James II murdered the 8th Earl of Douglas in February 1452, the Douglas family raised an army and rode through southern Scotland, tying the royal charter of safe-conduct to a horse's tail in a public insult. They approached Stirling but ultimately withdrew when negotiations with the English provided no military support. The Douglas clan's failure to follow through with military action at this critical moment showed their weakness — James II had successfully isolated them diplomatically.
