The Battle

History & Significance

Simon de Montfort junior was captured during Edward's dawn raid outside Kenilworth on 1 August 1265. He had barely escaped into the castle itself. Many of his knights were taken prisoner in the initial assault. His capture and the destruction of his army meant his father at Evesham the following day had no prospect of relief or reinforcement, making the outcome at Evesham inevitable.
