History & Significance

Brough Castle in the Eden valley held a small Royalist garrison. Its reduction was part of the Parliamentary mopping-up in Westmorland following the fall of Carlisle and Appleby. Lady Anne Clifford would later restore Brough as part of her Clifford castle reconstruction program.
