The Battle

History & Significance

Cambridge was the administrative and military centre of the Eastern Association throughout the Civil War. Cromwell supervised the garrisoning of the town and conducted repeated sweeps of the surrounding countryside to suppress Royalist gentry and secure the university for Parliament. The town served as the assembly point for Eastern Association forces and a supply depot.
