History & Significance

After storming Berwick in 1296, Edward I began massive refortification works. New walls were constructed, old defences strengthened, and a large garrison established. The refortification required engineers, laborers, and armed guards. Scottish attempts to interfere with the construction workers required repeated military responses. The rebuilt Berwick became the principal English military base for all subsequent Scottish campaigns.
