The combined Parliamentary and Scottish army besieged York — the Royalist northern capital — from April 1644. The siege triggered Rupert's march to relieve it; the confrontation ended at Marston Moor. After the battle Newcastle abandoned the city, which surrendered on honourable terms. York's fall completed Parliamentary control of the north of England and removed the main Royalist base north of the Trent.
