Anderitum (Pevensey Castle) was constructed around 290 AD to protect the harbour and approaches to the Weald. Its walls — still largely intact and incorporated into the medieval castle — are among the finest examples of late Roman military architecture in Britain. The oval plan with projecting D-shaped bastions was designed specifically to mount ballista artillery to engage ships at sea. It commanded the approaches to the Pevensey Levels and the Weald iron industry.
