The Battle

History & Significance

Reginald son of Somerled established the MacSorley hold on Islay and Kintyre after his fathers death, creating the direct ancestor line of Clan Donald. Reginald is credited with founding Saddell Abbey in Kintyre and with establishing the ecclesiastical patronage pattern that would characterise MacDonald lordship. His consolidation of Islay as the MacDonald power base was the critical step between Somerled and the Lordship.
