History & Significance

In his fourth campaign season Agricola crossed into Scotland and encountered peoples entirely new to Roman experience. Tacitus notes that new and unknown tribes were discovered. Roman forces advanced through Dumfriesshire and the Selgovae uplands. Forts were established on the Solway-Tay line and Agricola surveyed the Galloway coast while discussing an Irish invasion with an exiled Irish king who had come to him.
