The Battle

History & Significance

Returning from German captivity in 1194, Richard I moved swiftly against his brother John s castles. Nottingham Castle, held for John, refused to surrender even when told the king had returned. Richard besieged it in person, bringing up siege engines, and the garrison capitulated after two days when they saw the king with their own eyes. Richard was furious at the delay and fined the garrison heavily.
