History & Significance

Before the Trot of Turiff, the royalist Gordons and their northeast allies attempted to muster at Turiff in Aberdeenshire to organise resistance to the Covenanting movement. This royalist counter-muster in April 1639 was the precursor to the Trot of Turiff. The gathering of Gordon men and their allies at Turiff demonstrated the depth of royalist sympathy in the northeast but the military outcome was decisive against them.
