History & Significance

Prince Louis of France crossed to England in 1216 to support the rebel barons against King John. English naval defences failed to stop the French landing. Louis was welcomed by much of the baronage and by 1216 controlled much of England including London. The subsequent reversal (1217 naval battle) was decisive but the 1216 crossing changed the course of the conflict.
