History & Significance

The Fair of Lincoln in May 1217 was the decisive battle of the First Barons War. William Marshal and the regent's forces entered Lincoln from the north, fighting street by street from the castle outward. The Count of Perche, commanding the French and baronial force besieging the castle, was killed when a spear entered his visor. The French force was routed with minimal English casualties and many prisoners captured.
