History & Significance

Gordon Castle at Fochabers — the great seat of the Gordon Dukes of Gordon — was a major Jacobite base in northeast Scotland during the '45. The Gordons were the most powerful Jacobite noble family in Scotland, and their castle dominated the lower Spey valley. Lord Lewis Gordon operated from this base. The Spey mouth at Fochabers controlled the main east-coast road from Aberdeen to Inverness. When Cumberland's army advanced north, it crossed the Spey here in April 1746, the last significant terrain feature before the Jacobite position at Culloden.
