History & Significance

Robert Bruce besieged Norham Castle on the Tweed in 1318 as part of his systematic elimination of English border strongholds. Norham, the Bishop of Durham s great castle, had long served as a key border fortress. The siege lasted nearly a year. Eventually the garrison surrendered through starvation. Scottish control of Norham gave Bruce dominance over the main eastern approach to the Tweed crossing into England.
