The Battle

History & Significance

The government dispatched a military expedition to Skye in 1884 consisting of Marines and police aboard naval vessels to enforce law and arrest crofter leaders resisting eviction. The military expedition was the first use of the Royal Navy to impose order on a domestic population since the post-Culloden period.
