The Battle

History & Significance

The coal-mining district between Wakefield, Normanton, and Castleford saw repeated skirmishing as both sides sought control of the River Calder crossings and the coal supply. The area was economically significant and lay between the competing bases at Wakefield (Royalist) and Leeds (Parliamentary). Multiple small actions in this sector in 1643 formed part of the attritional campaign that preceded Adwalton Moor.
