History & Significance

Royston lay on the main road between Cambridge and London and was an important junction. Royalist cavalry from Newark and the Midlands occasionally probed south along this road. Parliamentary cavalry from Cambridge made regular patrols. The skirmishing in Hertfordshire during 1643 was the frontline of the Eastern Association's defence before the major campaigns of 1644 settled the northern war.
