History & Significance

Burford in the Cotswolds on the road between Oxford and Gloucester was the site of cavalry skirmishing in 1643 as both sides contested the approaches to the Royalist capital from the west. The town was also later the scene of the Leveller mutiny of 1649 which ended the radical faction within the New Model Army.
