On 2 November 1401 Glyndŵr attacked Caernarfon Castle — Edward I's most powerful symbol of English dominance over Wales. The Welsh could not take the walls, and 300 men were killed. However the battle is famous as the first time Glyndŵr flew the Golden Dragon of Uther Pendragon — his battle flag that consciously evoked Arthurian mythology and claimed continuity with the ancient British kings. Even in failure, the symbolism was powerful.
