The Battle

History & Significance

The 1662 Militia Act reorganised county militia forces across southern England. Large musters were held in Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset and Somerset — the counties most recently disturbed by the Penruddock rising of 1655. The southern county musters were both a military and political demonstration of restored order under the Cavalier Parliament.
