History & Significance

The MacNeils of Barra were the dominant clan in the southern Outer Hebrides and clashed periodically with their MacLean neighbours to the east. The MacNeils occupied a strategically important position on the sea routes between the Hebrides and Ireland, and their island stronghold of Kisimul Castle in Castlebay made them virtually impregnable to assault. Clan conflicts in this remote area are poorly documented but formed the background to daily life on the islands.
