History & Significance

Bolton Castle in Wensleydale — formerly a prison of Mary Queen of Scots — held a Royalist garrison that refused to surrender after Marston Moor. Parliament besieged it through 1645; it held out until November, well after Naseby. The garrison surrendered on honourable terms. The castle was partially slighted but the substantial medieval walls survive impressively.
