History & Significance

The ancient Benedictine abbey at Crowland in the Lincolnshire Fens was converted into a Royalist stronghold. Its island position in the marshes made it naturally defensible. Parliament reduced it as part of securing Lincolnshire — critical for the Eastern Association's communications. The medieval triangular bridge at Crowland — unique in England — gave the position additional strategic value.
