History & Significance

Montrose arrived at Blair Atholl in late August 1644 to begin his Highland campaign for Charles I. He recruited Highland and Irish troops there and used Blair Castle as his first base of operations. The occupation of Blair Atholl, controlling the southern entry to the Highland passes, was essential to his subsequent campaigning. The Atholl Murrays provided recruits and logistical support.
