Mulgrave Castle on the North Yorkshire coast held a Royalist garrison throughout the main phase of the Yorkshire war. After Marston Moor in July 1644 removed the main Royalist field force, Parliament systematically reduced the remaining Royalist garrisons. Mulgrave was besieged and taken by 1645. Its reduction was part of the mopping-up of North Riding Royalist strongholds that followed the great Parliamentary victory at Marston Moor.
