History & Significance

Letocetum (Wall, near Lichfield in Staffordshire) was a key Roman staging post on Watling Street. Its establishment required the subjugation of the surrounding territory. The site has produced significant archaeological evidence of Roman military occupation including bath-houses and an inn (mansio). It sat at the junction of Watling Street and the Ryknield Street, controlling movement across the Midlands.
