History & Significance

Hembury hillfort in Devon shows evidence of Roman military activity following its Iron Age occupation. The site dominated the upper Otter valley and the route south from the Exe valley. Excavations have produced Roman military finds consistent with a conquest-period occupation, making it one of the few Devon hillforts with tangible evidence of military contact.
