The Battle

History & Significance

Warkworth Castle, one of the finest fortresses in Northumberland and favourite residence of Henry Percy Hotspur, served as a key secondary base for the Percy family's border operations in the 1380s and 1390s. During the period of sustained Scottish raiding that preceded Otterburn, Warkworth provided a southern anchor to Percy defences while Alnwick anchored the northern flank. Warkworth's garrison conducted sorties against coastal raiders and provided a refuge for fleeing Northumberland communities.
