History & Significance

Sheffield Castle was a Royalist garrison in the West Riding. Parliamentary and Scottish forces besieged it after Marston Moor; the garrison surrendered in August 1644. Parliament ordered the castle demolished to prevent future use; it was completely destroyed, leaving only street names to mark its existence in the modern city. Sheffield's Civil War role was as a Royalist industrial base for cutlery and ironwork.
